the industrial revolution: good or bad

the industrial revolutions was good and bad. but i thought that it was bad because it caused poluttion to the air which killed plants and animals. in the factories they had many people die because of accidents in the factory. more than 500 men died from working in the factory. kids also worked in factories. they called them junk. they got paid very little. and i get that since they were very little. but it was dangerous for them

Was it Worth it?

I do not believe that the benefits of new technologies from industrialization were worth the costs. I don't think that it was worth it because the factories were built making impressive things but the factories were polluting the air. In a picture published by The Detroit Publishing Company in, New York (1890-1901) the picture showed a group of factories with smoke pouring out. All of the smoke was polluting the air and hurting the world around us.This is terrible for the world around us and yes it very intriguing things that would be better if they chose not to build as many factories, or do something to contain the smoke.  Also in that time period there was a poster about tuning little kid into human “trash” When they worked in factories, Children are “turing into junk” said  a poster made by Hine ,Lewis Wilkes and said that children were trying into “trash”, because of these factory instead of going to school and getting an education they worked at a factory basically ruining their lives before they even began. Likewise another reason this was bad because lots of people  got hurt in the progress. From a Injury report in Pittsburgh it talks about how 526 people died in a factory. THis was pretty common thing for people to get hurt working in a factory, And because of that many people died. That is why I believe that industrialization wasn’t worth the cost.

Was the Industrial Revolution Really Worth the Cost?

The benefits from the industrial revolution was not worth the cost because it was harmful to people, society, and the environment. In the picture Making Human Junk, It shows a cause and effect. The children come in fresh and new, and end up like “junk” because they do not have a good education. When they grow up, they are going to be really poor because they cannot get a good education since as a child, they didn’t have an education. Another reason why the benefits were not worth the costs were because in an Accident Report from June 1, 1906- June 30, 1907, 526 men died from work related deaths, for example, mining, logging. Also, 509 people were sent to hospitals injured in that same year. This is a problem that has no benefit because the Report also said that Allegheny County loses more than 500 workmen., almost half was American Born, 70% are workmen of skill and training, and 60% have not yet reached the prime of their working life. That is horrible because all of these people were young and had much potential up into their later life. They are losing a lot of Youth, skill, and strength every year, also known as human power. Is that really worth the cost? I think that this is really not worth the cost because we have potential successful men and women dying every year. Humanity is choosing industrial revolution over their own citizens and their lives. This is outrageous! The industrial revolution is also harming our environment and individuals greatly. According to the article “Factory Smoke Stacks”, the amount of pollution has dramatically increased, the air getting thicker everyday. In the article “Polluting the Environment”, it talks about how people had to use streetlights during the day because they couldn’t see at all because of the tremendous amount of pollution in the air.Also in the article “Polluting the Environment”, it says that when people are mining, they produce iron sulfur. This iron sulfur can get into streams and kill plants and animals nearby. This may be one of the causes of animal endangerment. Because of the iron sulfur and the mass of destruction of their habitats because of the factory space, and the animals having to adjust in such a short time, they may die. Therefore, the benefits from the industrial revolution was not worth the cost.

Industrialization Killed People and the Economy

The second industrial revolution brought many new types of inventions and innovations to America. However It also caused many problems due to pollution, deadly working conditions, and we humans had to get use to it. In the article Polluting the Environment, it says "coal mining produces chemicals such as iron sulfates that enter streams and kill plants and animals living in the area."  This shows that the pollution is causing the death of plants and animals which is a terrible thing because once one animal goes away, everything else in the food web of its habitat goes down with it and before we know it everything would be gone. Also, in making human junk it shows how children are mistreated and forced into labor, turning them into "junk". This shows how industrialization, and innovation is turning children into “junk” that only knows the scary reality of how dangerous working conditions are, and has many illnesses from these horrible working conditions. In Report on Industrial Accidents in Pittsburgh it explains how 526 were killed and 500 more were injured. This shows that the working conditions and pollution were both very deadly. In all the second industrial revolution was terrible, and unworthy of its price.

The benefits of new technologies from industrialization were not worth the cost. The poster Making Human Junk states that when adults allow their kids to work in factories, that turns them into “junk”. With these new resources there are more factories for children to work and they get paid low wages and they shouldn’t be working for the way that the children get treated. Likewise, in a photograph showing smokestacks in New York, it shows that the excessive amount of pollution that is put into the air as a result of factories. Introducing more pollution into the air has a huge impact on earth because pollution is terrible for the world. From factories you are putting bad things into the air and making this fresh air turn into “garbage”. In an accident report a lot of people had been getting injuries because of all of the danger of this new technology. For humans to be getting injured because of new technology it isn’t worth the money for people to be paying for this technology. This new use of technology is dangerous and isn’t worth the cost. Benefits of new technologies from industrialization is not worth the cost at all!

Where the Risks Worth Taking?

I do not believe that the benefits of new technologies and opportunities from industrialization were worth the costs of people's lives, the earth and children. The accident report by Eastman Crystal, 1916, clearly shows how the industrial revolution negatively impacted society. Multiple men have lost their lives in the industrialization during work accidents. According to accident report it states, “There's no bright side to this situation. By industrial accidents, Allegheny County loses more than 500 workmen every year.” This shows how many accidents are caused in the factories and work areas and how many people are affected by this. Not just the people who lost their lives but also their families. Industrialization was not worth all these mens lives. Likewise, in the poster Making Human Junk by Harry Reese, 1940, it shows how poorly children were treated and how they were used in industrialization. Children were used by many people, and once they were done with these kids they would toss them out like trash. Children were brought to work in factories and make a living for their family. According to the photograph the children were, “Good Material at First” Once the kids got overworked or rundown the kids would be sent away or fired from their job. The children were used and taken advantage of. Young kids in the first place should not have to work considering education is a very important part to being successful. This is not acceptable, children should not have been treated this way in the industrial revolution. Lastly, the photograph Factory Smoke Stacks from Detroit Publishing Co. introduces the thought of pollution to the nation. Pollution is all around bad for the earth, people and society. According to WWF, “Air pollution may poison soils and waterways, or kill plants and animals. Humans are also regularly harmed by pollution. Long-term exposure to air pollution, can lead to chronic respiratory disease, lung cancer and other diseases.” The earth, animals and people are being harmed by the pollution in the air. The environment was for ever damaged by pollution it brought to the from factories. Therefore I do not believe all the things that we went through were worth it for industrialization.

Is Working in factories life threatening? Is it Worth It?

I do not believe that the benefits of new technologies from industrialization were worth the overall costs. They were not worth the price because According to Crystal Eastman (1916) said in a accident report there were 526 casualties and 509 men hospitalised. This shows that it was not worth the price. Another reason new technologies from industrialization was not worth the price was because a picture of factors that filled thea skies with pollution. This was awful because it killed animals and plants that produced oxygen so it wrecked are air as well. This was danger to our America. Next reason that the benefits of new technologies from industrialization were awful for America, A poster that was posted around stays that normal kids will become human "junk". This is a horrid way to live because knowing that you can get hurt or turn into "junk" this is never away to live. The benefits of new technologies from industrialization were worth the overall costs.

Is Industrialization Worth Human Suffering?

I do not believe that the benefits of new technologies from industrialization were worth the costs. Many people had to suffer and die to create new inventions in factories. In the Exhibit Panel “Making Human Junk” in 1912 by Lewis Wickes Hine, it depicts the process of the children going from lively human beings to “Junk”. The children begin with high wages, making quality material, to getting low wages and losing personality and any possible future that was coming their way. This is a real life depiction of The Outsiders Theme, nothing golden can stay. In the Accident Report in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania of 1907 by Crystal Eastman, it says that 526 men were killed and 509 were injured in Allegheny County alone. 70 per cent of Allegheny County workers had much skill and training, and 60 per cent had not reached the prime of their working life. These men, who have not lived for very long, and have not reached their prime’s lives were wasted. In the Picture “Factory Smokestacks” in Syracuse, New York between 1890 and 1901 by the Detroit Publishing Company, it depicts factories emitting exceeding amounts of pollution into the air. Is it worth it to let all of these factories cover the sky in smoke? In the article titled “Polluting the Environment” on Discovery Education, it says that there was so much pollution in the air that people needed streetlights to see during the day. Iron Sulfates had also killed lots of animals. People had gotten rid of so many trees (Which, by the way give us oxygen). And if that doesn't convince you , the sewage from the factories had entered the water supply giving many Typhoid Fever. In the Remington Typewriter Ad by Wyckoff, Seamans & Benedict on September, 30, 1899, it’s purpose was probably to get people to buy this typewriter. Seeing the lengths that people will go to, to get people to buy a typewriter, knowing how much suffering had to happen to make it, is disgusting. Oh, whoop de doo, another 5 people got killed making this ONE typewriter. I think that the fact that so many people a willing to sacrifice a person’s life to innovate is horrible.

Loss and Pain with New Technology? Was that Worth the Cost?

The inventions and innovations that are helping us today wasn’t worth the cost. Lewis Wickes Hine explains, kids in factories are turning into “junk”. Children working in factories don’t have time to get an education or to enjoy playing around outside on a beautiful sunny day with other kids because they are working in factories, dirty, unsanitary, factories. A famous line of a poem says, “nothing gold can stay”. This poem is a perfect example of what industrialization did to these kids. They were gold, sweet, nice and then they started working in factories and turning from gold into junk. According to Crystal Eastman(1916), “Allegheny County loses more than 500 workmen every year,” Crystal explains how there were so many deaths because of all the debris in the factories. The debris was negatively impacting the air, clouding up lungs and killing countless deaths. Likewise the picture capturing, what a city looked like with factories is sickening. There is smoke in the air and polluted waters. There were so many factories I could barely see the grass. According to the article Polluting the Environment,“air pollution became so heavy in industrial cities that people needed streetlights to see during the day.“ The factories made the air so polluted people couldn’t see during the day. The people just walking around during the day probably got sick because the bad air filled their lungs. There is no way I would ever think industrialization was ok.

The benefits of new technology of industrialization were not worth the cost. Industrialization wasn’t worth the cost because children were being utilized to do work that put them in harm's way, many men were injured or killed working and so much pollution was added to the environment when factory businesses began to grow. First and foremost, children were put in factories instead of getting educated. Lewis Wickes Hine captured photographs of children tired, worn out and dirty. The poster said that the children who worked in factories had “No future” and “low wages.” Therefore, children were turned into “junk.” If industrialization was going to turn the next generation into “junk” it wasn’t worth the cost. Meanwhile, hard working men were becoming terribly injured or even killed. Crystal Eastman posted a report warning people about the amount of men who were injured from working in industrial activities. How is the industrial industry supposed to move on, if their workers can no longer work because of the conditions? Is industrialization really worth the cost of one innocent man’s life? No, it wasn’t. The working condition should have been safer to protect the men. In addition, industrialization also impacted the environment. The Detroit Publishing Company released an image of factories in New York, but the amount of pollution coming from the factories was outrageous. The air that people had to breathe everyday was being destroyed. The article “Polluting the Environment” explains that there was so much pollution that they needed street lights to see during the day. Children rotting, men hurting or dying, the environment being polluted, was that worth the cost? Overall, the benefits of new technology were not worth the cost.

I think that new technologies were not worth the cost. Kids got thrown into this too. They worked in factories, not getting an education. Allowing these kids to work in the factories, are making them into “junk”. They aren’t getting an education and that's terrible since the kids are the future of America. Adding onto that the working conditions are terrible and very very dangerous. People are working in these dangerous conditions. In 1906-1907, 526 men died in work related ways. It is really dangerous and unsafe for men to be working in. And also the factories are polluting the air. And there are so many factories which means that These Multiple factories are emitting so much smoke. People breathe in this air and the factories are making it so it isn’t even air anymore. Its smoke and smog. And according to the article, Polluting the Environment, the air got so bad that people needed street lights to see in the day. The day is supposed to be happy and shiny. This was why I think that the new innovations and inventions were not worth the affect.

Was the Sacrifice Worth it?

The benefits of new technologies from industrialization were not worth the costs. The new and exciting innovations from the industrial revolution caused pollution, little kids to have no future for their lives and caused many casualties for factory workers. In a picture published by Detroit Publishing Co, the factory smokestacks are giving off excessive amounts of air pollution. Many people were unaware of the pollution coming from factories and this picture showed them how the factories were damaging the environment. Many people were also getting very ill from the pollution. On the same note, because there were so many new factories being built they needed workers to run them. About 526 people were killed in an accident in a Pittsburgh factory and 509 injured in multiple accidents. The many lives that were lost in this accident were not worth it. These workers worked every day to earn a living and just because their job had bad conditions the shouldn't have had to die. Furthermore, factories also had child labor which stopped innocent kids from growing and getting an education. In a poster from 1913 made by Lewis Wickes Hine, little kids start work as healthy and strong kids with bright futures but with no education, they continue to work and end up as kids with low wages and no future. Instead of going to school to learn and grow they have to go to work in bad conditions. Industrialization was not worth taking these kids futures away from them. As you can see the benefits of new and innovative technologies were not worth the cost.

Was it worth the price?

If you didn’t have these typewriters than we would be writing on paper. Also, the technology would be totally different. That is why I think that they are worth the cost, would you want to be writing on paper right now. Without these inventions, you wouldn’t have phones or technology today. I think that bikes are important today. Without bikes, there is a lot of things we couldn’t do in this era. Without bikes in those days with bikes there would be no transporting fast and no news. How are you going to know about the news fast. In an interview with harry rece he was so excited to see all of the technology. He was in shock, in the interview he used words like “it was too darned much for me.”, “I only dreamed about this.” and more. So without the factories and industrial revolution the technology in this interview he wouldn’t be as excited.

Was Industrialization Worth The Cost? Let's Talk About That!!

I think that the industrialization was worth the cost due to all the things that came off from it. For example, the typewriter  was an invention that helped many people get messages from and to other people really fast. According to, Remington Typewriters there was a greater demand than ever for typewriters. They are faster than ever. That proves that people want the typewriters and that they do not want to send it telegraph or hand write it. Another example that came from industrialization is, some of the things made were not just for adults but for kids too. In this picture posted by Detroit Publishing Co in 1910, there are 3 kids with their new bikes and tricycles. The kids all look happy and are glad they have them. It is one thing that comes from the factories that kids get to enjoy and have fun with. Most of the time new inventions can cool and interesting especially for this one person named Harry Reece. She lived outside of Chicago on a small farm with her uncle. In the interview she talked about her trip to the city and all the new technology and inventions that made life easier. One of the things she talked about was the trolleys and how her uncle told her they worked. She was saying how great all the new things were. But in all I think that industrialization was worth it because of all the great things that came from it.

The Price Was Not Right

I do not believe that there are good benefits of new technologies from industrialization with how much money it cost. First, in a Typewriter Advertisement (1899) it states, “The sale of the Remington was $25 per cent, greater than in any previous year in its history.” It shows that because of the cost of industrialization all the prices went up and because the typewriters are a lot of money, there won't be as many in the world. This shows how much money kids had to suffer in factories just for their parents to buy these expensive typewriters. Furthermore, according to an Advertisement about Making Human Junk in 1912 it talks about, how before industrialization kids were happy but then industrialization came and there were low wages and the kids had no future so the kids turned into human “junk”. This is very sad because it is taking the kids of our future and putting them in factories to work and consequently the kids turn into human “junk”. As a matter of fact in a picture from detroit publishing (1890-1901) about Factory Smokestacks it shows, all these factories that are polluting the environment. All these factories our very bad for the environment. They are bad because they our polluting and all this pollution can injure kids, animals and plants because all this disgusting pollution. Industrialization might be a step up in technology but it is making kids suffer by working in factories to get money for their parents to buy typewriters and also all the pollution is injuring all these living things. In my opinion industrialization was not worth the cost.

I think the Industrial Revolution was worth the cost The industrial revolution made some great inventions like the typewriter. The typewriter was a really big step to the future at the time and it was used for a really long time before computers. A typewriter is basically a keyboard that will print out paper with the words you type. The ad was trying to sell americans the typewriter. This did make life better back then. This invention is one people still use today, the bicycle. In the industrial revolution people made the bicycle and it was revolutionary. People made ads showing kids being happy on their bikes and it made even more people buy the bicycle. Even today we still use the bicycle to sell the news and go on biking trails. While this did cause pollution, smokestacks are really helpful. Smokestacks provided people with jobs and gave them a better life. Tons of people got jobs working in smokestacks. I think that even if this caused some pollution it was also very good for people that needed jobs. In conclusion I think the Industrial Revolution was worth the cost.

Industrialization: Was It Worth The Cost?

The industrialization was very much worth the cost. Without the industrialization, most of humanity’s most helpful inventions wouldn’t exist. Where would we be now if we didn’t have the industrialization back then. It was substantial for us to create all these great, cool, and helpful new innovations. Like the computer, the car, and a bunch of other gadgets. In a Remington Typewriter Ad made in 1899 by Wyckoff, Seamans, & Benedict, it says how the new typewriter is very efficient, and many people buy the typewriters. And the typewriter led to computers. A huge percentage of people own computers, and without the typewriter, there would be no computers. And where would we be without computers? They help us do so many things that we need. Also,  in an interview with Harry Reece from 1936 to 1940, it shows how the new innovations were “something to marvel at”. These new innovations were wonderful and Harry Reece says so too. And in a photo of three kids with bicycles from 1910 to 1920 by the Detroit Publishing Company it shows how bicycles are also part of the industrialization. Bicycles today and then are very useful. They can be used for some jobs, or just to have fun. If there was no industrialization, bikes would never have been invented. The industrialization was extremely helpful and substantial to get where the human race is today. Without it, we wouldn’t have computers, bikes, cars, and much more. The industrialization was very much worth the price.

The cost of industrialization was worth the overall cost. Industrialization helped the country in many ways, in which some impact us today. One of the major upsides of industrialization was job opportunities. In a picture taken by the Detroit Publishing Co. in 1890-1901 you can see all the new factories with smoke coming out of them which means they are active. This photograph is symbolic because it is symbolising all the people that are working in the factories. Therefor with many people working means they have a salary and with people that once had a bad job they now have a better opportunity and can provide for their family and keep a stable paycheck. Another grand fact of industrialization was growth for businesses. For example Levi’s jeans success today would have been way smaller if it didn’t succeed in the early 1900’s, another example is according to an ad from the Harper’s Weekly 1899 it shows how industrialization is kicking off the typewriter and how it is doing os well and if it hadn’t done so well at that time it might not have the innovative typing tools we have today. Industrialization was a great time period that had many good things about it and when people ask me Was It Worth The Cost, i respond with yes.

The price is just right.

The inventions all around the 1900s were way worth the cost. In an ad created by Harper's weekly, The ad showed the typewriter. It shows how companies innovate amazing things. People would look at these ads all over and check them out and buy them because they persuade people to buy. Meanwhile, Children on bikes made a big difference from transportation to enjoyment with bikes. For this reason, a photo by Detroit Publishing Company (1910-1920) was created. It showed Kids on bicycles, posing or modeling. The bicycles were enjoyed and where good invention. Next, On Discovery Education As the number of factories increased, cities soon became overcrowded with workers. This explains how many people were coming for industrialization. Industrialization was way worth the cost.

People got diseases and living things started to die such as plants and trees and those things help us live. Industrialization had many people die during their work. An accident report states that 526 men were killed while doing their job by working in factories and more industrial jobs, made by The Pittsburgh Survey 1916. 60% of those people did not reach the prime of their life which is sorrowful. Also Industrialization gave kids no opportunities to have fun, live their life, to be free, and be a kid. On the poster Making Human Junk it shows kids with no future and turning into “Junk” made by Lewis Wickes 1913-1914. Because of industrialization those kids had no future and turned into “junk”. These days as a kid during our free time we go play outside, play video games, hang out with friends. Industrialization prevented kids from doing those types of things. The benefits of new technologies from industrialization were not worth the costs because industrialization polluted the air, killed people, and made kids human “junk”, that is why I believe industrialization is a terrible thing.  

The Industrial Revolution was Worth the Costs

During the time between 1890 and 1920, industrialization became a huge and influential part of human society. There were costs that it brought with it, but the benefits were worth it. The Picture of a factory area (Shown below) shows how many job opportunities were opened because of the new factories being built. Therefore allowing immigrants to get jobs, earn more money, and move out of the crowded apartments with other families. This would make it harder to spread disease because they would be living with fewer people in cleaner places. Therefore helping society stay healthy. Now many people are saying that Industrialization was not worth the cost of human lives lost in factory accidents. According to an accident report of a factory, around 804 lives were lost a year in the factories. But no battle is ever won without casualties. For every life lost in the factory, another ten are saved because of the people earning money to feed their families, who could get jobs to help more people. More were saved from the factory then lost.  The industrialization provided jobs and much more for people. Likewise, the add for the Remington Typewriter shows some of the things industrialization provided to the people. This provided a new and much more effective way of writing reports, books, and other pieces of writing. The Typewriter also inspired programs like MS Word, Pages, and Google Docs. Which are now a vital part of human society as we know it. They are used by millions upon millions of people for almost any job you would ever work at. Industrialization had its costs, but it had benefits that were worth it. Without the industrial revolution, humans would still be a bunch of farming horseriding people with only one set of clothes. Sacrifices were made, but the final result was worth it.

Not Worth it, Why?

Industrialization was not worth the price, on society or the environment. It was ruining children’s lives. Lewis Hines made a poster in 1913-14 that proves this. It shows that children are “good material” at first, but when treated badly and paid low wages, they become human “junk”. Are we risking children’s lives with industrialization? The factories in this process also released lots of pollution into the air. A photo taken in 1890 proves this. It shows smoke shooting out of four pipes, in massive amounts. This caused people to have to use street lights to see during the day! Another reason I don’t support this is because many people were killed. There was a news report taken in the 1900s. It says that 526 men were killed in factories during this time. For all of these reasons, I believe it wasn’t worth the price. 😕

This is affecting people because people working at factories are getting injured or killed. Many men got hurt or even killed. Lastly, in a poster created by Lewis Wickes Hines (1913-1914) informs people what children work on in factories and how it turns into “junk.” Children were put through a lot of hard work at factories. Children should be learning at school instead of getting hurt at factories. The poster shows that children have no future in factories. Children are being paid low wages while working. The poster shows that by children working at factories turns them into junk. The benefits of new technologies from industrialization were not worth the cause!

Siege and total war!!

I think the siege and total war were horrible things. The siege was a horrible thing because people had to eat their pets and eat rats. They also had to make caves and making it. In the total war, I think that was crazy how Sherman was going through towns and burning them down. Both were totally horrible. 

Is total war wrong or right?

I think that siege is okay if it only affected the soldiers and not the civilians. I think total war is not good but they still needed to slow down the Confederate Army somehow.  If the Union did not use the strategies they would lose the war. I think it is justified to use these strategies on the army.

Total War and Siege.. Is it right?

Total war and siege are not good tactics to use. They killed civilians and children. Would you want to be killed? Siege was to surround and block off everything until they surrendered. That was a harsh tactic that starved most civilians. Total war was also not a good tactic because it destroyed peoples homes and everything they lived off of. Total war and Siege are harsh tactics that shouldn't have been used.

Was Siege the way to Win the Civil War?

Siege was a terrible thing. It made people starve and lose their supplies. But, the Union needed it to win the war. Even though I would never agree with the idea of siege I think it was necessary to help the Union win the war. The Union needed to end the fighting and take power. The Union surrounded the Confederates cutting off their ability to get food and other necessary resources for the civilians and soldiers. In the Battle of Vicksburg, Ulysses S. Grant used siege to make the Confederates surrender. Despite the fact that siege is a terrible thing the Union needed it to help them get closer to winning the war.

Is Siege the Key to Peace During War?

Siege is right because, in order to win, you need to take power. In order to minimize fighting, you need to end the fighting. So in that case, one side needs a forced surrender. If no one surrenders, then there will be more fighting to make one another surrender. Siege is force surrender. When one group of people surround another, one group will run out of supplies because that is the point of siege, it is force surrender. The Civil War is one example. In the battle of Vicksburg, they needed to siege the Confederates because then the battle could end. There are many reasons why you need to siege in order to stop fighting

Is Siege Necessary?!?

I don't think that using siege is necessary because they killed innocent people and when you think about with all of the presidential issues we are not salving it with battles or starvation or seating a whole town on fire. They could have salved it in a better or different way.

Total war or siege...

I think they are both bad tactics. A siege is not a good tactic because the way to win a war is to make another side surrender, and surrounding a place makes them surrender. But it is bad because most people starved or had eat rats and their horses dies. A siege is to cut off all supplies from entering an area; forcing surrender. The total war was destroying all civilian and military resources. I think they are both bad.

Yes, i think that siege and total war is necessary because they have to get their point across. I think that this is acceptable because it is smart but they are killing a lot of people, but i still think that it is smarter to tech them a lesson about slavery, The north had to do this because they cant just use words they have to get their point across.

Fair or Unfair

I think that they were not justified to bur the entire place down because then a lot of people are going to die and that doesn't help America or anything else. I just don't think that it helps anyone when you kill everyone. But I just don't think it it's that your justified to kill all these Innocent civilizes who don't have a say in was happening to there country I just don't think its  fair.

The Necessities of Total War and Siege

I think it was necessary for William Sherman to use total war and Ulysses to force Georgia under siege, they wanted to win and they had to, so they took an unbelievably forceful approach and forced the south to surrender.

Was it Justified?

Civilians are just normal people, they are women and children who did not deserve to be killed. In both of Grants and Shemerans, kill civilians to get the Confederates to surrender. Yes, it is a terrible thing keeping civilians in a cave, having them live off of there own pets and animals, or burning down their houses making them evacuate their homes. Even though the Union did terrible things to the instant people it was necessary to be able to win the war, blocking off and sieging the Vicksburg it was able to cut off supplies to enter the area.

Civil War: Total War and Siege

     Total War is necessary in the attack to end the war and have the union win. This step they had to do to end the confederates because siege was also necessary so the confederates couldn't ship supplies to other confederates in the battle of Gettysburg and the union has supplies so the union will win. They had to let civilians die to win the war. This was a huge tactic of Siege so people on the confederates in Gettysburg couldn't get food or supplies. It was necessary  and a tactic because there were no laws against it and it was an all out war which they had to win.

Total war shouldn't of happened and siege shouldn't of happened either in the Civil War. Total war was to destroy all civilian and military resources. Siege was to cut off all supplies from entering an area; forcing surrender. I never think that violence is the answer. They could've figured out a different way of handling it because they could of just surrounded them with the siege but they could still let them have let them have some food.

No, the Union is hurting innocent people. I think that they should have battles instead of getting children involved. I think that siege was ok because it was just one town, but total war was a little much. Total war affected tons of civilizations and their homes. It is not fair for children to be killed from this but siege is ok because it is not a big part of the South like total war.

I think it is not okay. I think this because, innocent people were being killed, and they didn't do anything to impact the war. Besides, houses were being burned, people slathered, and people scared. This is why I think this isn't okay.

War strategies like total war or siege, are inhumane.  When there is war, the civilians should not be harmed. That is the soldier's job. They have to go out and fight, and not the citizens. The civilians are just people, they don't deserve to get hurt. Of course in the Civil War, Southern citizens had slaves. Even though it's terrible. They shouldn't get the outcome of all this violence, they just deserve to have their slaves taken from them. So in my opinion, war strategies like siege and total war are not necessary.

I don't think that Total War was necessary and I believable that they could have made them surrender in a different way. Maybe Sherman could have threatened instead of just done it. Maybe they could have tried to burn less land. Maybe they could have burned just Georgia. I don't think that this was a wise choice on Sherman or the Union's part.

The South Chose Their Side!

You may be saying it is inhumane to kill all those people. But, is it inhumane to have slaves. Yes. When Sherman burnt Atlanta, and Grant sieged Vicksburg, civilians died. But, they chose their side. The south knows a thing or two about being inhumane. Slavery, cough cough. So why is it bad when the north gets revenge. Sherman made a great choice. Let the south burn to the ground.

Siege/Total War: Justified?

I think that siege and total war is justified. The confederates started this stuff. The Union didn't. They wanted a fight, the Union gave them a fight. They don't need their supplies. Also they have trashed the Union before, haven't they? So that's it. I think this is necessary. Also the Union needs to take control to win. If they didn't do this, they may not have won.

a better way to make the south surrender is to just fight until one of the sides surrender. instead of burning everything that could help the south in the war. then everything would be good and they could still use the factories to make resources and send resources.

Siege and Total War

Siege and total war were necessary tactics in order for the north to win the war. If the north would have not burnt all railroads and military supplies then the south would have gotten re-enforcements ad the south could keep fighting. Civilians are worth the cost because it both teaches them a lesson about slavery and since they technically live in the south and some might be in the army both make them support the south.

I think that Siege is barbaric. There is a better way like use hostages to make them surrender and I and not saying that's the right thing to do but people where forced to eat rats. Rats caused some of the most deadly plagues ever and you had to eat them to survive.

In my opinion of John brown he was known as a martyr. A martyr is someone who killed/got killed for their own beliefs. John brown attacked a federal base that held slaves and john brown wanted to free all of them. He was captured and sentenced for treason. He was hanged on december 2nd. Although he was fighting for the right thing, to end slavery, he did it in the wrong way. According to The Road to Disunion “Brown’s men cut telegraph wires and captured some 60 citizens of the town to hold them hostage.” He killed people, which led him to his death. I think he is a murderer not a martyr because he killed people instead of saving them. His plan was not strong enough and it didn’t do anything to change the way slavery was.

Was John Brown a good or bad guy? It could really be argued either way, he had a good point but did not have to take it as far as he did. John Brown was a murder, a terrorist, he killed innocent people, and wanted a war just for his cause against slavery. John Brown led an attack on pro-slavery men in Pottawatomie Creek, Kansas, murdering five men and boys. This lead to an uprising of a small war between pro-slavery and antislavery groups. The name Bleeding Kansas came after that attack. This is just one thing that John Brown could have taken a different approach to the situation. John Brown is a martyr. I think that because he was just trying to help abolish slavery. He was willing to do whatever it takes to stop slavery. He risked his life to help slavery. It is not the best way but it is a way to help stop slavery. It is those people that risk their lives that helped slavery stop. John Brown may have killed, but he killed because he needed some way to stop slavery. John Brown is a good guy! John Brown believes slavery isn’t going to stop without violence and he is right. I think John Brown is a martyr because we wanted slavery to end which is a very good thing to end. If John Brown did not try to end slavery the attention to slavery would not be in the world. I think that John Brown was a murderer because he killed an innocent watchman and wanted to give slaves weapons to kill people or slave owners. John Brown in my opinion was a martyr and he was killed for his beliefs. He tried to free slaves and lead a slave rebellion even if he would get killed in doing so. He led his men to Harper’s Ferry which was an arsenal in Virginia, and overtook it to supply his men and slaves with weapons. He felt as though it was his personal mission to end slavery with the help of his sons. He was very brave for doing these things.

John Brown in my opinion, is good. Even though he murdered a lot of people, it was for a great cause, and those Southerners had it coming to them. The two sides already tried using words and laws but it didn’t work. People say he is a terrorist, and a madman, but the real horrible people are the slave owners. The Southerners beat and took away freedom and education from slaves. They even put free African Americans into slavery because judges would get more money for it. When you look at bad people in history, don’t look at John Brown, look at slave owners.

John Brown in my opinion is both, a martyr and a murderer. He is mostly a martyr and was known for being one, even though he killed innocent people. However he did kill them for a good cause. The text states from the social studies techbook on explorer 5, “Brown was an extreme abolitionist who felt he had a personal mission to eliminate slavery.” Brown was completely against slavery and was an extreme abolitionist. The text also states from explorer 5, “In revenge, John Brown led an attack on pro-slavery men in Pottawatomie Creek, Kansas, murdering five men and boys.” John Brown Killed innocent people because he wanted to end slavery. John Brown did not end up being successful and was executed and hanged. He was remembered as a martyr and the North honored him by ringing church bells and flying their flags at half mast.

I think he did the right thing. If someone shoots at you, you shoot back. The tensions in America were growing and Brown saw that there would be no peaceful solution. So Brown and his 21 followers attacked a federal armory. His plan was to arm the slaves and lead a revolt, but the slaves didn't come. America was too far gone to find a peaceful solution. He was eventually overpowered and captured. Once the marines came in it was over. John Brown is an American hero. Yes, he killed people but I still think he is awesome. John Brown, a true American.

I believe John Brown was a murderer and not a martyr. Even though his cause was good because he wanted to eliminate slavery he murdered 5 men and boys in Kansas, Missouri. In the end of his journey he didn’t end slavery. But someone that stopped segregation didn’t use murder, they used words. This person was Martin Luther King Jr. Instead of murdering people he used his words to stop segregation. Violence is not the only way to overcome problems. John Brown was a martyr, not a murderer, in my opinion. He may have had a little overreaction, but his intentions were good. For example, he did rob Harper Ferry, but to abolish slavery. His plan failed, with no slaves joining him. John Brown was a man who lived in the antebellum time period. I think that John Brown is a martyr because he killed tons of people and got executed because of his beliefs that slavery was wrong. In October 1859 he and his 5 sons wanted to arm several slaves. It didn’t turn out well because all of his sons died and none of the slaves joined the raid. John was charged as a criminal and was executed in December 1859.  A martyr is somebody who sometimes killed and got killed for his/hers beliefs. John Brown was a martyr and was killed for being against slavery.
